DIY website builder
- Wix lists Light £9, Core £16 and Business £25 a month on a year-long plan, paid in full at the start.1
- Squarespace lists £12 to £29 a month paid annually. Paying each month can cost more: Basic is £16 a month instead of £12.2
- These prices don’t include VAT, a tax. A website address is free for the first year only.12
- One shop lists a .co.uk website address for about £9.95 a year, before VAT.5
One-off website project
- One guide says a freelancer may charge £500–£1,500 for 3–5 pages, or £1,500–£3,000 for 5–10 pages. It lists £3,000–£8,000 for a regional agency.3
- Another guide lists £2,000–£7,000 for a small business website built by an agency.4
- After launch, one guide lists £50–£300 a month for hosting, website address renewal, security, upkeep and content changes. An agency may charge more.3
- If you pay for each change or by the hour, the same guide lists £25–£120 an hour.3

Why website prices vary
There’s no single answer to “How much does a website cost?” Two quotes may cover very different work. These are some things that can change the price.
- Number of pages
A five-page website takes less work than a 40-page site with service and location pages.
- Template or custom design
Changing a ready-made design usually costs less than making a new design for your business.
- Features
Online shops, booking forms, payments, member areas and links to other tools take extra time to build and test.
- Words and photos
Some prices include writing and photos. Others expect you to provide them.
- Who builds it
Freelancers, small studios and large agencies charge different prices. Prices also vary around the UK.
- What happens after launch
Hosting, updates, backups and changes may be included, cost extra or be your job to arrange.

How much does a small business website cost in the UK?
It depends on who builds it and what the price includes. Website builders such as Wix and Squarespace list popular plans at about £9 to £29 a month, paid a year in advance. One UK guide lists £500 to £1,500 for a simple 3 to 5 page site from a freelancer, and another lists £2,000 to £7,000 for a small business website built by an agency. With Coullweb it is one monthly fee, with the build, hosting, upkeep and changes included.
How much does a website cost to run once it is built?
One UK guide lists £50 to £300 a month after launch for hosting, website address renewal, security, upkeep and changes, or £25 to £120 an hour if you pay for each change. A .co.uk website address costs about £9.95 a year at one shop, before VAT. With Coullweb, the running costs are part of your monthly fee.
Is it better to pay for a website upfront or monthly?
Paying upfront suits you if you will look after the site yourself, or someone can look after it for you afterwards. Paying monthly spreads the cost and puts the hosting, security and changes on someone else. Either way, check who makes changes and what happens if you leave before you sign.

Do I pay anything before I see my website?
No. We design your homepage for free, and you don’t need to give us your card details. If you decide not to go ahead, you pay nothing. Your first monthly payment starts the rest of the build.
Is there a contract or a minimum term?
There is no minimum term, notice period or exit fee. We take payment in advance, and your plan renews every 30 days until you cancel in writing. Your service continues until the end of the 30 days you’ve paid for.
What happens to my website if I cancel?
Your website address and content stay yours: your words, photos, logo and prices. We own the design and code we make, so your right to use them ends with the plan, and we take the website offline.
