Researchers cannow find fundingat a glance.

Rank Prize funds and celebrates science in human nutrition and optoelectronics. We gave it a new look and rebuilt the website on WordPress, so prizes, symposia and grants are easy to find and easy to update.

Before

Bright science. A website that hid it.

Prizes, symposia, grants and an archive back to 1972. Two fields, each with its own committee. The old site, The Rank Prize Funds, put most of it in long pages of text and one grey news box.

  1. Funding was hard to find.

Grants sat under a menu called Schemes. Researchers had to read long pages to see what was open and who could apply.

  2. Every update meant editing a page.

News, deadlines and winners were typed into one grey box on the homepage. Old notices stayed there for months.

  3. It broke on smaller screens.

The title was a picture, built for one desktop width. Below it, the title got cut off and the text squeezed into a thin column.

How it’s structured

How we did it, layer by layer.

Like the lenses in an optical instrument, the site is a stack of layers. Each one shapes what passes through it. Watch it come apart and see what each layer does. Skip ahead whenever you like, or drag the drawing to turn it.

Content, kept in WordPress.

This is where the Rank Prize team works. News, grants, symposia and photos all live here. Edit a page, press Publish, done.

  • Grants, symposia, prize winners, news and photo albums each have their own place.
  • A members’ login, with password resets handled on the site.
  • Editors use normal WordPress screens. No code needed.

Records, not long pages.

Each grant, symposium and prize winner is saved as a record with set fields, a bit like a card in a library catalogue.

  • Every record is tagged Nutrition or Optoelectronics, so each field gets its own lists.
  • Grants carry an open or closed status, so the grants page is always right.
  • Symposia are filed by year, back to 1972, so the archive builds itself.

The design, built as a theme.

We designed the new look, then built it as a custom WordPress theme. Each page is made from reusable parts: headers, banners, cards and side menus.

  • The line-drawn logo, the mint banner and the curved photo edge match the design.
  • One template serves every grant. Another serves every symposium.
  • Headings are real text, not pictures of text, so search engines and screen readers can read them.

Delivery: sharp, quick and open to all.

Before a page reaches you, it is tuned for your screen and the way you browse.

  • Each photo is saved in several sizes, from 300 to 2,048 pixels. Phones get small files.
  • Photos further down the page load only when you scroll to them.
  • Layouts reshape for phones and tablets, with a skip link for keyboard users.
  • Pages are cached, so they stay quick on busy prize days.

The finished page.

All four layers, pressed flat into one page. This is the live Rank Prize homepage, captured in October 2026.

  • What visitors see is simple. The layers underneath keep it that way.
  • Every page on the site is built the same way, from the same parts.

Highlights

Some of our favourite bits.

Three parts of the Rank Prize site we especially enjoyed building.

  • The Rank Prize grants page: grant cards marked Nutrition and Closed, beside a menu for all, nutrition and optoelectronics grants.

    Grants

Every grant on one page, with its field and whether it is open or closed.

  • The Rank Prize symposia page: a year-by-year archive menu beside cards for the latest topics, such as Visible and UV photonic integrated circuits.

    Symposia archive

Every symposium filed by field and year, from 1972 to this one.

  • The Rank Prize page: a wide photo of the prize dinner in a library, the line-drawn logo and a side menu of winners for each field.

    The Prize

Winners in both fields, with each year’s winners on a page of their own.

FAQ

Questions about this build.

Thinking about something similar? These are the questions we hear most.

Yes. We designed the new look and built it as a custom WordPress theme, so the design and the code were planned together. We checked every page against the design on phones, tablets and desktops.

It is well known, well supported and free to use. Staff can add news, grants and events from normal screens, and it works with the tools most charities already use.

Each one is a record with set fields: its field of science, its dates and whether it is open. Change a record once and every list on the site that shows it changes too.

Yes. Book a call and tell us about your work and who visits your site. We’ll suggest a set-up and send a short plan with a fixed price. See website development for how we work.
